Crescent Regional Hospital in Lancaster, Texas, is reportedly the first in the United States to use hologram technology for doctor-patient visits. The hospital has introduced “Holobox,” a cutting-edge 3D system that projects life-sized holograms of doctors, enabling them to conduct real-time consultations with patients at a clinic located 30 miles away.
Developed by Dutch company Holoconnects, the Holobox stands 86 inches tall and operates with just electricity and internet access. The system features anti-glare glass, a transparent LCD screen, hi-fi speakers, and a multi-touch operating system, all designed to deliver a realistic and interactive holographic experience. The hologram can display either pre-recorded videos or live, real-time video feeds, enhancing the sense of presence between patients and their healthcare providers.
Crescent Regional Hospital CEO Raji Kumar expressed enthusiasm about bringing this advanced technology to North Texas. “There’s so much artificial intelligence, robotic technology, so many things,” Kumar told ABC affiliate WFAA. “I’m super excited to bring some of this technology to North Texas.”
The hologram system, known as the “Doctor-Patient Hologram Engagement System,” aims to revolutionize remote healthcare by providing patients with real-time access to specialists from anywhere in the world. Steve Stirling, Managing Director of Holoconnects for North America, emphasized that this technology could enhance the relationship between patients and healthcare professionals while saving doctors valuable time.
Kumar noted that the Holobox significantly reduces travel time for doctors, allowing them to conduct pre-op, post-op, and follow-up appointments without leaving their offices. She also plans to expand the technology’s use within the hospital and bring it to rural areas to improve access to specialist care. Stirling hopes other hospitals will adopt similar hologram programs to address doctor shortages and improve patient care across the country.
