The Ontario government has announced that a new hospital in Whitby will be built and operational within the next decade, according to Health Minister Sylvia Jones. The province has allocated $12 million in capital planning grants to Lakeridge Health as part of a broader plan to enhance healthcare services across Durham Region, located east of Toronto.
During a recent event in Oshawa, Premier Doug Ford and Minister Jones confirmed their support for the long-term project, which will add 300 new hospital beds in the region. This expansion includes the redevelopment of the Bowmanville Hospital, the construction of a new post-acute care facility in Pickering, and considerations for the redevelopment of Ajax Pickering Hospital.
Premier Ford emphasized that this expansion is designed to deliver more connected and convenient care to residents of Durham Region. Lakeridge Health CEO Cynthia Davis expressed enthusiasm, noting that the project will address critical gaps in complex continuing care and rehabilitation services across the region.
Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy welcomed the news, stating, “I am absolutely thrilled that the province of Ontario has recognized the urgent need for a new hospital in Durham Region and announced a capital planning grant for Lakeridge Health.”
However, the announcement comes after previous tensions between the Town of Whitby and the provincial government. Earlier this year, Whitby launched an advocacy campaign to secure a firm commitment from the province, following repeated promises of a new hospital without concrete action. The campaign, which included prize giveaways to residents, drew criticism from Premier Ford, who insisted that the site selection process would be determined by the province and not influenced by local pressure.
